How to Choose the Best Photo for a Custom Pet Portrait
Start with a clear photo
A strong custom pet portrait begins with a useful reference photo. The best image is usually sharp enough to show the eyes, nose, fur direction and the small features that make your pet recognizable. A modern phone photo is often more than enough when it is taken in good light and the pet is reasonably close to the camera.
Choose natural light when possible
Soft daylight near a window or outdoors in open shade can reveal fur colour and facial detail without harsh shadows. Try to avoid a very dark room, heavy filters or a flash that changes the natural appearance of the eyes. If your pet has dark fur, look for a photo where the face is separated clearly from the background.
Focus on expression and personality
The technically sharpest photo is not always the most meaningful. A relaxed look, a familiar head tilt or an expression your family instantly recognizes can make the finished artwork feel more personal. If you have several photos, choose one main image for the pose and keep one or two extra images available to show eye colour, markings or other details.
Think about the final crop
For a head-and-shoulders portrait, a close image usually works best. For a full-body drawing, make sure paws, ears and tail are visible and not cut off by the edge of the frame. If two pets will appear together, they do not always need to be in the same original photograph; separate clear photos can often be used as references for a combined composition.
Avoid screenshots when the original is available
Screenshots and heavily compressed social-media images can lose fine detail. Sending the original camera photo helps preserve texture and small features. If the only meaningful photo is older or lower resolution, it may still be usable, but provide any additional photos that help confirm the pet's appearance.
